Monday a la Mode: Workplace Trends, Autumn 2014

By M Kimball – ElephantBeads

With the holiday season fast approaching, we are re-launching Fashion Monday with a refreshed look and a broader scope. With “Monday a la Mode” you can expect to greet each Monday with a fresh, on-trend perspective. We will broaden our focus to include trending items that can be found on Etsy: not just fashion but home decor, kids’ wear, bed and bath, DIY.

This week, as we celebrate Labor Day in the United States, we share three trends in workplace fashion. Interestingly, with the world around us in chaos, we see fashion trends going “back to basics.”

  1. Classic colors are IN! Black, white and light neutrals feature prominently in Fall 2014 fashions. The old adage that you can’t wear white after Labor Day? It no longer applies. Whether your workplace style is corporate or casual, the basics are what’s trending.
  2. Light layers are classy and comfortable. Cardigans, scarves, light blazers add interest.
  3. Big jewelry is the perfect way to offset the basic colors and simple looks. Whether you select a statement pendant, a cocktail ring, or hammered metal earrings, consider going a little BIGGER this Fall.

Here are some Etsy finds that reflect these workplace trends:

This pale peach scarf can add interesting texture and a bit of warmth to a workplace outfit, whether corporate or casual – available from CrystalCat1989.

Textured, hammered copper earrings from Judys Designs will warm up any outfit this Autumn!

Monday Fashion: Style vs Fashion

I just came across a fascinating article on the difference between style and fashion. To sum up, style is one’s personal way of dressing & expressing oneself through clothing and accessories, while fashion is the current trend in clothing, set by clothing designers, seen on runways, and owned by the rich.

An metaphor from the article:

We can compare high fashion to 5-star restaurant dishes that show innovation, creativity, and expertise. A plate of soft-boiled quail eggs with a side of liquid nitrogen ice cream will look exquisite and show a great deal of culinary competence, just as so many gowns and suits on the runway look like moving works of art. However, there is something to be said for hot dog vendors, deli owners, and grandma’s kitchen. They may not make particularly progressive dishes, but their food is still delicious and meaningful. Their food may not be fashionable, but it has style. It is unique to them, and it is recognized as something special.

Monday Fashion: Spring Hair Colors

Elle tells us that we ‘must-try’ several hair colors for spring, ranging from platinum blonde to honey blonde through a rich brown to red, plus lavender purple and pastel blue. To see all the hair colors, click here.

Monday Fashion: Sassy Outfit

Today Steph, from SassyBelleWares on Etsy and a member of the DTeam, is sharing with us her favorite outfit.

I am most comfortable in jeans, a tee, my favorite boots, and an armful of bracelets!

For me, the important part is that my jeans fit me and are comfy. If the brand is not what the fashion mags say are “cool”, don’t worry! If you wear “cool” jeans that don’t fit you will look less stylish than you will in a pair of “uncool” jeans that fit you perfectly. Take the time to try on lots of different brands and styles until you find what is right for you. One of my fave brands is pricey BUT this brand is the first time I found a pair of jeans that really fit me. If you let them hang dry they will last forever. I believe, one pricey pair I wear and am completely comfy in is worth the money. The trick is to go to the store and try them on to find your cut and size. Then go online and search to find them at a lower price. Sites like hautelook.com and ruelala.com always have pricey jeans for much lower than the retail price even after the shipping charges are added on.

I am obsessed with graphic tees. I think they add fun to an outfit. Enough said!
The boots are where I splurge but the splurge is worth it. I have had my pair of Frye boots since 2007 and they only get better with time. I wear them constantly and they are not even close to being worn out. If I could only have one pair of shoes, I would choose my Fryes without hesitation!

My motto on bracelets is, “you can never have too many bracelets at an arm party!”

Friday Feature: LovinTheGoodOleDays

Note: Today we are visiting with Lisa, from LovinTheGoodOleDays.

LovinTheGoodOleDays is a constantly evolving creative outlet for me. I started my shop with cloth napkins and handmade recycled paper. I have added items along the way that filled either a personal need I had or something I am personally interested in.

Fall Beauty Upcycled Corduroy and Wool Sweater Pencil Skirt

While I love all the brightly colored items I see on Etsy, I am actually quite down to Earth and I think the items I make give you a good idea of my own personal tastes. If I wouldn’t have it in my home, I wouldn’t have it in my shop, unless it is a custom order, that is.

The newest addition to my shop is my Sweater Creation line of recycled/upcycled sweater garments. I just have a few now, but I have a mountain of sweaters and so many great ideas. I am so pleased to finally have this line getting under way. I must give a shout-out to Katwise, the originator of the reconstructed sweater coat, for her inspiration. Without her tutorial and her blessing, these might never have come to be.

And a great big thank you to Etsy for making it possible for so many creative folks to be able to follow their dreams.

Monday Fashion: Robe Coats

In the real world, we are all thinking about spring, and spring trends, and when the snow will stop. But in the fashion world, it’s already time to be thinking about fall, and fall trends.

Last week, Fashion Week in New York was all about an upcoming fashion trend. Can you guess what it is? No? Here’s a hint: you might look like you just rolled out of bed if you wear one. Still guessing?

Here it is: Robe coats. Yep, a belted coat styled like a bathrobe.
