Monday Fashion: Robe Coats

In the real world, we are all thinking about spring, and spring trends, and when the snow will stop. But in the fashion world, it’s already time to be thinking about fall, and fall trends.

Last week, Fashion Week in New York was all about an upcoming fashion trend. Can you guess what it is? No? Here’s a hint: you might look like you just rolled out of bed if you wear one. Still guessing?

Here it is: Robe coats. Yep, a belted coat styled like a bathrobe.

Here’s your spring fashion tip: feathers will be in.

While feathers used to be used for warmth and trimming, you can now find them in all sorts of unusual places, like hair.

Monday Fashion: Men’s Fashion

Men’s fashion sometimes seems a bit neglected, in comparison to the many bright and varied clothes available to women. One might even wonder, do men only like simple colors and lines for their wardrobe? The answer is no, it is a modern fashion for men to dress simply.

Perhaps this stems from American diplomats in 1853 being asked by the American government not to wear court dress anymore. From The Economist:

In 1853 it asked its diplomats not to wear court dress: frippery was not worthy of a serious-minded young republic. Unfortunately, at royal receptions American diplomats in dark tailcoats were sometimes confused with butlers.

At any rate, bright colors are not often in fashion in men, and men often seem to have trouble choosing clothes. Never fear, help is at hand!

Esquire has an entire blog, The Style Blog, devoted to men’s fashion.

You can find men’s fashion on Pinterest.

And, last but not least, tips for buying a suit, that de facto uniform of the modern businessman.

Looking for a fashionable way to stay warm this winter? Cashmere sweaters are beautiful and expensive. If you can afford it, there is no nicer way to stay warm.

Did you know that cashmere sweaters first became popular fashion statements in the 1920s and 30s? Neither did I, until I read this fascinating article on the history of cashmere sweaters.

Besides the history, the article also shares tips on caring for your cashmere sweater. The most important thing is to avoid pilling by never letting your sweater touch a rough surface. It should always have silk or a synthetic fabric scarf between it and car seat belts, purse straps, or rough outer clothing.

Monday Fashion

This month’s fashion trends include cream and black coats, with occasional pops of bright colors. Celebrities are into recycling last year’s fashions (below see Kate Moss and her fabulous coat), so don’t expect anything new this year.

Next week, we’ll take a look at men’s trending fashion for the spring.

Pantone Color of the Year 2014: Radiant Orchid

Pantone is the official fashion arbiter of color, deciding which colors will be fashionable in each year and season. For 2014, the official Pantone Color of the Year is Radiant Orchid.

It’s never too early…

This is the time of year when those of us who are artsy or craftsy begin hankering for the holidays. How early is TOO early to begin taking the holiday decorations out of storage? When can we begin knitting, crocheting, hammering or painting the handmade gifts we’ll be wrapping up or stuffing in stockings? The answer is different for everybody (just as the holidays we celebrate may be different), but the treasuries here may put you in the mood for Halloween or Christmas…

Introducing Hoalane – June’s Treasury Challenge winner!

Hoalane is the winner of the June DTeam Treasury Challenge, and we are pleased to honor her lovely treasury with a shop profile! In addition, please look for Hoalane’s items in the August treasury challenge entries. The DTeam is taking a one-month break from the treasury challenge to accommodate busy schedules. Enjoy the interview with Hoalane!

When did you open your Etsy shop?

I opened my shop in March 2011.

How did you transition from making things to selling them?

I just heard about Etsy and decided to see if I could sell my items online. It’s taken some time to work with the photos and figuring out how everything works.

We know that every sale is a fantastic event, but is there a single sale that stands out for you as special?

I cannot think of a particular sale that stands out, but whenever I receive a positive feedback from a happy customer, that’s what makes my day

What is the most important source of inspiration for you as an artist?

I get inspiration from everywhere. Sometimes I’ll see designs from a fabric, or in a magazine and try to think of ways to incorporate it into my designs.

What product are you most excited about right now in your shop?

My favorite product right now is the cathedral veil with blusher decorated with scattered flowers. I just think it’s lovely yet functional because the longer cathedral veil detaches.

Do you sell your creations elsewhere? If so, where?

I currently only use Etsy and find that keeps me busy.

What one piece of advice do you have for a new Etsy shop owner?

My advice would be to find what works for you, and keep doing it.
