Designing Impressions’ Crocheted Plush Charm Shop

How’d you get started on Etsy?
I was laid off and without many prospects. A local bead shop owner who later became a friend suggested that I look at Etsy as a viable shop for the jewelry I was creating at the time. Since then, I’ve moved into crocheted amigurumi and the shop has morphed along with me.

What was your inspiration for your shop?
I switched to crochet when I realized their popularity spans many demographics that held me back with jewelry. The teenagers and tweenagers love to hang them from their backpacks and their mothers like them on their purses and keys.

What’s your favorite shop item and why?

My favorite? Wow, I’m not sure. Each one is so unique. The owls are my general favorites.
How do you unwind when you’re not creating?
That is my unwinding. I have always created something. If I’m doing I feel a bit lost. Sometimes getting lost is a good thing and that’s when I get delve into popular urban fantasy like The Dresden Files book series and Doctor Who on TV.
What’s your favorite kind of cupcake?
The kind that’s been decorated by my daughter with chocolate frosting and loaded with sprinkles.
What pushes you to want to create something?
I’m constantly looking for the next thing. I’ll find a piece of junk and an idea will pop in using some kind of technique I have tried or seen. Most of the time I just mentally file it for reference. If I own it already, I have no problem tearing into a new project and start creating.

What’s your favorite cartoon as a kid? As an adult, if you stumble upon it while channel surfing now would you stop & watch?

I get enough cartoon time with my 7 year old in charge of the remote on most weekends. Phineas and Ferb along with Scooby Doo is at the top of our list. My favorite favorite is Dexter’s Laboratory which I can’t see much of because I don’t have cable or satellite. This is so totally different from what I watched as a kid. Star Blazers was one of my favorites as well as anything else that had aliens, time travel and photon torpedoes.

What’s your fantasy job?
To be a paid artist with a large open studio and endless supplies.
Do you have a secret guilty pleasure?
Yes, but I’m not telling. I’d feel too guilty.
List 3 things you are so obsessed with it is torture to ever say no to.
Chocolate
Salmon
Fresh ripe tomato sandwich with lots of mayo and salt & pepper on white bread.
Do you have a favorite author? When you read, do you use a proper bookmark, bend the page, or grab anything handy to mark your place?
Jim Butcher, JR Ward, Patricia Briggs and Rachel Caine are my faves. I use a bookmark that has seen better days and needs replacing. When I can’t find it, I’ll grab just about anything to use.
If money was no object and you can live wherever you want….where would that be?
There’s a little place in NC called Whynot that is virtually nothing but potters. I’d love to be in a community that is craftier than most. And Whynot is gorgeous with lots of rural farmlands.
What is your best childhood memory?
Spending time with my dad and my 100-n-1 electronics kit making an AM radio. We made it several times over the years in the kitchen and used the plumbing pipes as the antenna. We graduated from that to soldering my first digital clock together.
